The "Landes" forest is the largest
expanse of forest in Western Europe starting in the foot hills
of the Pyrenees and bordering the Atlantic Ocean up to the vineyards
of the "Medoc". The forest is peppered with lakes
and brimming over with wild life. There are many tracks through
the woods which used to be tapped for their pine resin in bygone
days. Wood is not however the only crop as corn, tobacco, asparagus,
tulips and kiwi's are also cultivated. |

Those who wish for more cultural activities will find the
cities of Bayonne and San Sebastian to their liking. Lourdes
one of the main shrines of the Roman Catholic Church is within
easy reach. In the summer there are numerous "fêtes",
culminating in the "Fête de Dax", which are
similar to a Spanish fiesta with the eating and drinking going
on until dawn. The Pyrenees too are in easy reach. Visit the
Basque pilgrim town of St Jean Pied de Port with its steep narrow
streets and quaint stone houses. All in all there are activities
for all the family and all tastes in the vicinity.
